Artist Statement: I always admired the stained glass windows in the cathedrals, museums and public buildings of Europe while growing up in Germany. Being both functional and decorative they provide privacy and soften harsh light while defining the surrounding space with unique pieces of art.
When I took my first class in the early 90s I was so fascinated with the possibilities of glass that I accepted a job at a stained glass shop, Royalty Stained Glass, in Colorado Springs. There I had the opportunity to develop my skills in design and construction of stained glass windows, sidelights, lamps, repair, fusing and slumping, as well as mosaics; I experimented with sandblasting and painting on glass; and I had the privilege to teach many hobbyists which was extremely enjoyable and rewarding.
For my artwork I select glass with interesting texture, color mix, and movement and try to enhance its character and personality with bold organic lines. I love to incorporate objects such as agates, crystals, glass globs, bevels, and copper. Rather than drawing a pattern and filling it with glass, I let the glass inspire my designs which are often modern and abstract in nature.
Many of my pieces, especially the table art, are made using the copper foil technique which was introduced by Louis Comfort Tiffany. This allows me to keep my artwork lightweight and delicate. For larger windows with geometric or bevel cluster designs I prefer working with the traditional lead came.
