Artist Statement:
Growing up in Georgia, my father almost surreptitiously exposed us to great literature and art. I began to learn to draw by copying Greek soldiers off my father's copy of "The Iliad." Later in college I discovered that reproductions of the great works of the world had been hanging around for years in our childhood home. In college in the 70's, I often collected all the oversized art books and stared at the painting of Gauguin and Chagall as if I could absorb their lessons through osmosis.
I have lived and taught on the Navajo reservation for half of my adult life. I seem to fit in with the pace of that world, which is slow and has a natural beauty. I began painting in watercolors while on the reservation.
Having lived in Colorado for the past five years, I owe my current obsession with oil painting to local guru Tina Riesterer. It has been an unexpected gift to discover the intensity of oil painting. I love the texture of the paint, the smell of the turpentine, and the lessons in humility that painting provides.
I am a private artist. I go for mood, intensity, and simple statements in my paintings.
